Grants

Quilting Culture has applied for several grants to underwrite aspects of the Mennonite Relief Sale Quilt Project. To date we have received several grants.

Our thanks to both of these organizations for their support:

National Quilting Association, USA

We are very pleased to have gained a grant from the National Quilting Association to further our project during 2004.  Not only will it cover some communication and material costs, the grants offers validation of the important of research in this arena.

Women in Mission, Mennonite Church, Canada

We are equally pleased to have the support of WIM, Canada for our project.  Many of the women who have and currently quilt for the MCC relief sale quilt auction are members of WIM or other women's organizations of the broader Mennonite and Amish churches.  The support of this groups is, therefore, particularly meaningful.

WIM has agreed to copy and distribute the research survey within the Mennonite Church of Canada, in addition to financially supporting the project in 2004/2005.  We expect that this support will allow the researchers to attend some of the Canadian MCC relief sales.

Lucy Hilty Research Fund

We learned in April 2004 that this project has been selected to receive the Lucy Hilty Research Fund, a grant offered by the American Quilt Study Group.  As Lucy Hilty was born into a Mennonite family it is particularly meaningful to us for the project to receive this award.

Lucy Hilty was born in Pandora, Ohio in 1917.  She attended Bowling Green State University during the Great Depression and completed her Masters degree at Columbia University after World War II. During the war, Lucy worked as a volunteer for the International Committee of the Red Cross. After retiring from her career as a kindergarten teacher, she became on of the early quilting teachers in the late 1970s.  She developed a reputation for fine hand-quilting and elegant quilting designs.

Lucy's mother was involved in Church group quilting and the Mennonite Relief Fund and her father helped by marking the quilting pattern.  Lucy came to see a quilt as a big area to express an idea.

A founding member of the American Quilt Study Group, Lucy served on the board of directors during its formative years. She was part of the Berkeley, California group of "Crazy Quilters" and spent her final years in Kensington, California.

Northern Tier MCC

We are very grateful to funds provided by the Northern Tier.  Their support allowed Marilyn to attend the sale in Sioux Falls and also contributed to our transportations costs when traveling to Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Quilter's Guild of Dallas

In May '05 we were awarded a research guild from the Quilter's Guild of Dallas.  We were very excited to receive these funds as they will allow us to attend three more sales - Illinois, Houston and Virginia and to do interviews along the way to the Virginia sale and up the east coast.  As we were concerned about how we would gather information from these geographic areas we are so delighted for this support and affirmation.

Central Oklahoma Quilter's Guild, Inc.

In May '05 we were also awarded funds to support gathering data in the Midwestern states and to purchase a recording devise.  We have been busy in '04 traveling to sales further away from us to the neglect of areas closer to us.  In fall of '05 and the beginning of '06 we intend to investigate quilting activity closer to home in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, etc.  Thanks to this guild.

Individuals have also contributed to the research:  Numerous individuals, too many to mention, have contributed their support through this project by offering us lodging, feeding us, helping us with aspects of our project including suggesting women we should speak to and contacting them for us, allowing us to copying materials at no cost, etc.  For that support we are very grateful. Not only has it allowed us to continue with the project but has also put us in contact with some wonderful people.  Thank you.

We are also grateful that some individuals have invested financially in the project.  They are:

Rosie Epp
Curtis Gaylord
Pat Harris
Fern Klaus
Jean Hershey
Dodie Lepp
