Many women were involved in the production of the quilt. Quilt artist, Renske Helmuth, Kaleidoscope of Nations coordinator, collected seventy-three fabrics sent by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) volunteers from forty countries in the fall of 1999 to begin this work. The center of the quilt that features the MCC logo, a dove and cross, was completed first. A kaleidoscope in 40 colors surrounded it. Next, forty members of the Waterloo County Quilters’ Guild researched the country of the fabric they received and each “dressed a doll.” Another Guild member machine appliquéd the names of all the countries on the background fabric. The pieces were then assembled by the Listowel Mennonite Church ladies’ group who, along with members of the Guild, did the quilting. Over 70 people worked on the quilt. Kaleidoscope of Nations was voted Best Group Quilt and received the Viewer’s Choice award at the Ontario Juried Quilt Show in May 2002.
